Weak iPod shuffle sales may affect flash prices
Because of “weaker than expected” iPod shuffle sales, NAND flash prices could drop up to 40% for other manufacturers if Apple’s allotted portion is made available, according to a DigiTimes report.
“Although the iPod Shuffle was a hit when it was first introduced on the market, sales of the MP3 player are not justifying the supply forecasts for NAND flash that Apple has secured from Samsung, the sources stated. If Apple cancels the orders, Samsung may release even more NAND flash into a market already being affected by the influx of a number of new NAND flash producers,” the tech site reports.

Boy, and I remember when it was posted that Apple had the share of the market in flash devices, I yawned. Well, here it is and the market is not only flattening; Apple’s domination is being eroded by others manufacturers. Apple needs to seriously look to its future. Jobs can only go around so long acting like a twit to IBM and others as they will cut him out as well. How much you want to bet Apple stops making hardware--other than media devices--and allows others to make the Mac? Jobs’ getting older and looking to cash-out in a major way. He’s not the Mac zealot he professes to be. Besides, if Apple is based upon one person then we’ve all been fooled. I have been a Mac user since 1984, but the writing is on the wall.

Well all that has happened before—Jobs getting fired and Apple licensing Mac OS—and Apple almost went under. That is, until they hired Jobs again. Apple is turning into a larger corporation and that means both good and bad things for the consumers. I think this is simply because the iPod shuffle is more hype than anything else.

In recent weeks RAM prices have dropped 10-20% per week. I’ve seen:
1GB DDR RAM - $50
1GB SD RAM - $40
1GB MemoryStick - $65
1Gb xD - $70
1GB USB Flash - $40
1GB CF - $40
1GB Creative flash player - $100
I’d say the bottom is dropping out of all kinds of memory, right across the board.
By not including a mini-SD slot on the shuffle, Apple really missed a chance to excel and differentiate the product. It’s definitely large enough, that’s for sure.
